This fiber art contribution to the Felting the Future project was created by Misty Gish of Utica in Daviess County, who also shared the following reflection:
What is your hope for the future?
People will once again value knowledge and wisdom over flattery and sensationalism. My children’s children will have a better world than I had as a child. People will recognize the value in others and nature. People will realize that the Earth and resources are more important than money and profits.
Describe a time when you had to work hard to find hope and resilience.
When I was diagnosed with cancer and unsure of how the future would go.
What advice would you offer to a younger version of yourself?
Time will pass regardless of what you are doing. Don’t avoid doing things because of how long they might take or what others will think. Put yourself first more often.
What wisdom do you hope your future self carries with her/them?
Don’t concern yourself with what others think of you or what you are doing, as long as you are doing the right & honest thing.
Felting the Future is a participatory art project that is bringing together 500 Kentuckians to imagine and shape a hopeful vision of what lies ahead. Using the ancient technique of felting, participants of all ages and backgrounds are creating handmade pieces that will be joined into one large, colorful installation, which will tour the Commonwealth beginning in summer 2026. This project is coordinated by artist Kris Grenier (@krisgrenierart) and supported by the Kentucky Foundation for Women (@kyfound4women).
