To get started, you’ll need a felting kit. If you’d like to receive one, please email me to request one.
Together, we’ll create a fabric mural with pieces made by 500 Kentuckians. Your contribution is called a prefelt—a lightly felted piece of art. This guide will walk you through the process step by step, but soon you’ll be able to follow along as I create a prefelt on YouTube.
Participating in Felting the Future will take about 1.5-2 hours, and it can be done in one sitting or over several days. If you have any questions along the way, please feel free to email me at feltingthefuture@gmail.com.
A. Planning
Step 1: Reflect
Use the notecards in your kit to answer the following prompts:
- What is your hope for the future?
- When have you had to find resilience?
- What advice would you give your younger self?
- What wisdom do you hope to carry into the future?
Return at least one completed notecard with your prefelt. You may sign your name or keep it anonymous.
Step 2: Design
Think about how to turn your words into an image:
- Representational: a picture of your hope
- Symbolic: an object or symbol
- Abstract: colors, textures, or patterns
Anything you make will be beautiful and meaningful!
