B Smith – Harrison County

This fiber art contribution to the Felting the Future project was created by B Smith of Cynthiana in Harrison County, who also shared the following reflection:

What is your hope for the future?

Time. I certainly have very little disretionary time at my disposal right now. I’d like to live to have time.

Describe a time when you had to work hard to find hope and resilience.

Every. Single. Day. As editor of two small-town newspapers at least twice a week I feel like i’m standing at the bottom of a mountain. Understaffed and losing ground, it’s hard to stay positive. Criticism of the paper while fighting this losing battle makes me want to walk away, but I won’t. If I go, two papers will likely be edited from afar and not nearly as local. So no hope for improvement, but learning resilience.

What wisdom do you hope your future self carries with her/them?

Remember to claim joy. It’s there for the taking.

Felting the Future is a participatory art project that is bringing together 500 Kentuckians to imagine and shape a hopeful vision of what lies ahead. Using the ancient technique of felting, participants of all ages and backgrounds are creating handmade pieces that will be joined into one large, colorful installation, which will tour the Commonwealth beginning in 2027. This project is coordinated by artist Kris Grenier (@krisgrenierart) and supported by the Kentucky Foundation for Women (@kyfound4women).
